Awards in a Box was started by a Career Navy Spouse in effort to support her husband, a disabled combat veteran with 23 years of service in the United States Navy, serving in 5 combat tours of duty (more than 34 months day for day in the combat zone) across 3 War Campaigns – Operations Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom. At 44 years old, she was observing her husband withering away and dying a little more each day from his combat related injuries. She encouraged him to work a little bit each day in his wood shop in 2017. Low and behold she helped her husband find that he could make shadow boxes, plaques, cutting boards, and more out of wood. Across 2017 he slowly was able to spend more and more time in the woodshop and accomplish what he could in a given day.
In 2018 Awards in a Box was created and in May 2018 a website commissioned to begin advertising and selling the products her husband made.
Because Awards in a Box is a Women Owned and Disabled-Veteran Owned Business, a commitment to donate 20% of all profits to the Nevada Paralyzed Veterans of America is proudly advertised on the website.
This career Navy Spouse likely saved the life of her husband helping him realize he still has purpose and can find esteem in his abilities and talents, that he is not only a weapon of war, but a peaceful harvester of hope, kindness, and compassion.
